About this artwork

Painted in Japan in the late 1500s, during the Momoyama period, this pair of six-panel folding screens uses ink, colour and gold on paper. The landscape unfolds from right to left, beginning with blossoming plum in early spring and closing with late autumn peonies. Irises of early summer and bellflowers of early autumn frame three swimming ducks at the centre, while smaller birds appear across the scene. On the right, birds of prey threaten a pheasant and an egret. On the left, a peacock and peahen seem to converse. Hawks are linked with military strength, and peafowl with cultural standing.

On your wall: Its seasonal flowers, birds and gold-toned surface would suit a calm living room, a dining area or a study where a botanical scene can reward a longer look.
