About this artwork

Odilon Redon's Pégase et l'Hydre shows a red horse rearing up, its green wings lifted, above blue serpent-like coils at the lower left. The creatures stand out against a mottled ground of orange and blue, so the whole scene seems to shimmer. The image has the soft, powdery look of pastel with gouache. Redon was a French Symbolist, and the work belongs to the Collection Bemberg. The title points to the meeting of Pegasus and the Hydra, which the image brings to life in rich, contrasting colour.

On your wall: The warm orange, deep blue and bold red would add energy to a study, a living room or a hallway, especially where the walls are neutral.

About Odilon Redon

Odilon Redon was a French artist who worked as a draughtsman, printmaker and painter. He belonged to the Symbolist movement, which favoured imagination and suggestion over straightforward description. Moving between drawing, printmaking and painting, he built a body of work that sits comfortably within that tradition and rewards slow, attentive looking.
