This 1850 plate by John Gould shows two Sulawesi serpent eagles (Spilornis rufipectus) perched together on a branch. One is an adult, and the other is a paler juvenile, so the two stages of plumage can be compared side by side. Smaller birds appear in the background, and the plate carries a caption naming the species and Gould. It is a hand-coloured lithograph, a print technique in which the image is drawn on stone and the colour is then added by hand. Gould was an English ornithologist known for his illustrated monographs on birds, many of them with plates by other artists.

John Gould was an English ornithologist who published monographs on birds, with plates by his wife, Elizabeth Gould, and artists including Edward Lear, Joseph Wolf and William Matthew Hart. His seven-volume Birds of Australia, from the 1840s, led many to regard him as the father of Australian bird study. He also identified the birds now called Darwin's finches.
