Pomegranate blossom, peonies and lilies gather beside a garden rock in an early summer scene, painted with delicate brushwork and vivid colour.

This Ming dynasty hanging scroll, painted in colour on silk, shows three kinds of flowers growing beside a garden rock. Reading from top to bottom, there are flowering pomegranate, peonies and lilies. Each carries a good wish. The peony stands for wealth and prosperity. The pomegranate, shown in festive red just before it turns into a fruit full of seeds, is linked with the hope for many sons. The lily, called baihe in Chinese, sounds like a phrase meaning togetherness for a hundred years, so it speaks of harmony and unity. A scroll like this would have made a fitting gift for a married woman.
On your wall: Its vivid reds and soft floral forms would suit a living room, bedroom or entrance hall, especially where a thoughtful, warm gift for a couple or a newly married woman is wanted.
