Edward Lear, 1867
A river scene from 1867, drawn by Edward Lear on the Nile, where boats and water set a calm, unhurried mood.

Edward Lear made this view of boats on the Nile in 1867. It is a work on paper, combining watercolour and gouache with brown ink and graphite on wove paper. That mix of materials suggests a drawing built up in stages, with line and colour working together. Lear is best known for his nonsense verse and limericks, yet he was also an accomplished artist, and this piece belongs to his Egyptian subjects. It is now held at the Yale Center for British Art.
On your wall: Its river subject and soft, watercolour character suit a calm living room, study or hallway, and sit well beside botanical prints in a gentle, natural scheme.

Edward Lear was an English artist, illustrator, musician, author and poet. He is remembered above all for his literary nonsense, in both verse and prose, and especially for his limericks. He did much to popularise the form, though he never actually used that word for it. His playful writing sits alongside his work as an artist.
