This 1904 plate by Ernst Haeckel is devoted to a siphonophore, a colonial sea creature, labelled here as Strobalia cupola and thought to be a Forskalia species. Rather than a single image, it brings together a series of studies: the whole colony, the gas bladder seen from above, and a cluster of polyps and medusae shown in stages as parts are removed. Further views show a stinging tentacle, along with a female medusa from the side and from below, and a male medusa. It forms plate 17 of Haeckel's Kunstformen der Natur, in the Siphonophorae group.
On your wall: Its delicate, botanical-looking forms suit a study, library, hallway or bathroom, especially where natural history prints or quiet, detailed pictures are already part of the scheme.

Ernst Haeckel was a German zoologist, naturalist, physician and professor who also worked as an artist. He described and named thousands of new species, drew a family tree linking all living things, and coined terms such as ecology and phylum. He helped introduce Charles Darwin's ideas to Germany.
