Odilon Redon painted Breton Village in 1890, working in oil on canvas. The title points to a village in Brittany, and the work depicts a house, which gives the picture its human, everyday focus. Redon is best known as a French Symbolist who worked as a draughtsman, printmaker and painter, so it is interesting to see him turn to a simple village scene. It is a work to spend a little time with, and to enjoy for its modest subject and the handling of paint.
On your wall: A village scene with a house suits a hallway, living room or study, especially where you want a calm, quietly rural note alongside botanical pieces.

Odilon Redon was a French artist who worked as a draughtsman, printmaker and painter. He belonged to the Symbolist movement, which favoured imagination and suggestion over straightforward description. Moving between drawing, printmaking and painting, he built a body of work that sits comfortably within that tradition and rewards slow, attentive looking.
