About this artwork

Flowers and Birds is an album leaf painted in ink and colour on paper by Qian Xuan. It dates from the first half of the 14th century, during China's Yuan dynasty (1271-1368). As the title suggests, the subject is blossoms and birds, a theme long associated with Chinese painting. The album format is an intimate one, made to be viewed up close, and the combination of ink and colour allows for fine line alongside soft touches of pigment. Qian Xuan came from Huzhou, in present-day Zhejiang, and lived across the late Song and early Yuan periods. The original belongs to the Cleveland Museum of Art.

On your wall: Its gentle botanical subject suits studies, bedrooms, reading corners and calm living spaces, especially where natural materials and a restrained, unhurried atmosphere are wanted.
