About this artwork

Odilon Redon painted this still life of an Etruscan-style vase filled with flowers. The bouquet is stylised rather than botanical, with blooms in blue, ochre and brown that stand out gently against the mottled golden background. The vase itself is terracotta, its simple form anchoring the composition. Redon worked in tempera on canvas, a medium that gives the surface a soft, matt quality. The painting belongs to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Redon was a French Symbolist, and here the subject is quiet and familiar, with colour doing much of the work.

On your wall: The warm golden ground and earthy blues suit living rooms, dining areas and studies, particularly where natural tones or traditional furnishings are already in place.

About Odilon Redon

Odilon Redon was a French artist who worked as a draughtsman, printmaker and painter. He belonged to the Symbolist movement, which favoured imagination and suggestion over straightforward description. Moving between drawing, printmaking and painting, he built a body of work that sits comfortably within that tradition and rewards slow, attentive looking.
