About this artwork

This leaf shows white chrysanthemums growing next to a large rock washed in ink. It is painted in ink and colour on silk, and carries a signature and seals. It comes from a double album of twenty paintings by Chen Hongshou, which includes landscapes, figures and flowers. Chen's late albums are known for an archaistic, highly refined manner that avoids shallowness or sentimentality. His figures and landscapes in these albums are deliberately miniaturised, much like small Chinese gardens or the carefully chosen table rocks used for contemplation, which invite a viewer to see the world in miniature.

On your wall: The white blooms and softly washed rock suit a calm study, a quiet hallway or a bedroom, and sit well alongside natural materials and muted colours.

About Chen Hongshou

Chen Hongshou was a Chinese painter who worked in the late Ming dynasty. His name was once commonly romanised as Ch'en Hung-shou, so you may come across it spelled that way in older writing. Amelia is pleased to offer his work to anyone who enjoys the painting traditions of Ming-era China.
