About this artwork

This Romantic landscape by Caspar David Friedrich looks across the harbour of Greifswald in the Bay of Greifswald. A large two-masted ship stands among smaller sailboats, while the town rises in the distance as a soft, misty skyline of church towers. The sun is low, and in the foreground a few men in hats appear as dark silhouettes against the light. It is painted in oil on canvas and dates from around 1818 to 1820. The work has hung in the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin since the institution acquired it in 1919.

On your wall: Its soft sunset light and calm harbour view suit living rooms, studies and hallways, and sit well in quiet spaces where a contemplative sea scene is welcome.

About Caspar David Friedrich

Caspar David Friedrich was a German Romantic landscape painter, widely regarded as the most important German artist of his generation. His work is often symbolic and turns away from classical ideals, expressing a personal, emotional response to nature. He frequently painted contemplative figures set against night skies, morning mists, bare trees or Gothic ruins.
