Winslow Homer painted this watercolour in 1880, working on paper. A schooner is silhouetted on the water beneath a fiery orange sunset sky. In the foreground sit a small rowboat and dark rocks, which anchor the scene and set the glowing sky and distant vessel at a distance. The work is signed and dated 1880. It belongs to the Westmoreland Museum of American Art and is a good example of the marine subjects for which Homer is best known.
On your wall: Its warm oranges and deep, dark silhouettes suit a living room, study or hallway, particularly where a sea or coastal scene would sit well.

Winslow Homer was an American painter and illustrator, working mainly with landscape subjects and best known for his scenes of the sea. He is regarded as one of the leading painters of nineteenth-century America, and as an important figure in American art more broadly. His marine paintings remain the work most closely associated with his name.
