About this artwork

Ivan Aivazovsky painted this landscape in 1845, working in oil on canvas. The title points to the Galata Tower seen by moonlight, so the scene is a nocturnal one, where the tower is lit by the glow of the moon. Aivazovsky was a Russian Romantic painter, born in the Black Sea port of Feodosia in Crimea, and he is regarded as one of the great masters of marine art. This work belongs to the landscape tradition and today hangs in Norway.

On your wall: Its night-time subject suits a quiet corner such as a study, bedroom or reading room, where a calm moonlit view can be enjoyed at leisure.
