Ivan Aivazovsky painted Sunset over Yalta in 1861, working in oil on canvas. The title points to a view of the town of Yalta as the sun goes down, a moment of the day that suited a painter so closely associated with marine art. Aivazovsky was a Russian Romantic painter, born in the Black Sea port of Feodosia in Crimea, where he spent much of his life. For anyone who enjoys coastal scenes and the changing light of evening, this work offers a quiet, atmospheric place to rest the eye.
On your wall: Its sunset subject and coastal theme suit living rooms, studies and calm bedrooms, especially where a warm, contemplative view of the sea is welcome.
