Peng Xu's Ink Plum shows a flowering plum tree in early spring, painted in ink on silk as a hanging scroll in Ming-dynasty China, in the late 1400s or early 1500s. The branches are brushed with vigour, and white streaks left within the ink suggest rough, knotted bark. The blossoms are drawn in fine, delicate lines, while a grey wash covers the whole surface and leaves only the petals untouched. Peng Xu is regarded as the foremost follower of the plum blossom painter Wang Mian. Paintings of the seasons like this one were once displayed in scholars' studios and other rooms of the house.
On your wall: Its soft greys and quiet botanical subject suit studies, bedrooms, hallways and calm living spaces, especially where a restrained, contemplative atmosphere is wanted.
