Painted in 1910, Underwater Vision is an oil on canvas by the French Symbolist Odilon Redon. As the title suggests, it imagines a world beneath the water, and seahorses are among the subjects associated with it. Redon, who worked as a draughtsman and printmaker as well as a painter, was drawn to imagery that suggests inner experience more than literal description. The work belongs to the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, where it can be seen today.
On your wall: Its watery, dreamlike subject would suit a quiet bedroom, a bathroom or a reading corner where there is room to linger over it.

Odilon Redon was a French artist who worked as a draughtsman, printmaker and painter. He belonged to the Symbolist movement, which favoured imagination and suggestion over straightforward description. Moving between drawing, printmaking and painting, he built a body of work that sits comfortably within that tradition and rewards slow, attentive looking.
