About this artwork

This is plate 96 from Ernst Haeckel's Kunstformen der Natur, dated 1904, and it is devoted to the Chaetopoda, the bristle worms. The plate gathers several marine species into a single composition, among them Sabella spectabilis, Serpula contortuplicata, Spirographis spallanzanii, Terebella emmalina, Eunice magnifica, Hermione hystricella and Cloëia euglochis. Haeckel was a zoologist and marine biologist as well as an artist, and he described thousands of new species during his career. Here that double training shows: each creature is presented as a subject for close study, yet the arrangement invites you to enjoy its forms as well.

On your wall: It suits a study, library or reading corner, and would sit well in a calm living room or hallway where visitors may enjoy looking closely.
