About this artwork

Vallotton's woodcut from 1896 shows a man playing an upright piano, with candles set on the instrument. Beside him stands a dark cabinet, and the wall behind is covered in a tulip pattern. The print is in black and white, so the scene is built from solid areas of dark and light, with the patterned wallpaper set against the heavy shapes of the piano and cabinet. It is inscribed 'LE PIANO' and carries the artist's initials, 'FV'. Vallotton, a Swiss and French artist linked with Les Nabis, was an important figure in the development of the modern woodcut.

On your wall: Its black-and-white contrast and domestic musical subject suit a study, music room, hallway or living room, especially where a restrained, graphic look is wanted.
