Arthur Wesley Dow, 1892
An orange clapboard building stands on stilts above a muddy creek, with rocks, grassy banks and houses beyond.

Arthur Wesley Dow made this colour woodcut in 1892. It shows a small orange clapboard building raised on wooden stilts at the edge of a muddy creek. Rocks lie in the foreground and grassy banks rise behind, with a few houses set further back. The warm orange of the building stands out against the quieter tones of the water and the land around it. Dow was an American artist who worked as a painter, printmaker and photographer, and who also taught.
On your wall: Its warm orange and calm creekside scene suit a hallway, study or living room, especially where a restrained, minimalist space needs one soft point of colour.

His varied practice shows an artist comfortable moving between different media, and it is this breadth that characterises his work.
