Painted in 1904 in oil on canvas, this is an interior by the Danish painter Vilhelm Hammershøi. A large, dark Empire-style sofa fills the left side of the picture. On the right stand a table with a red cover and a green vase, small notes of colour in an otherwise restrained room. A woman reads near the wall. Hammershøi is known for subdued, poetic interiors and portraits, and this work belongs comfortably to that tradition of calm, unhurried looking.
On your wall: Its muted tones and calm domestic subject suit a living room, study or bedroom, particularly in minimalist spaces where a quiet picture can sit alongside simple furnishings.

Vilhelm Hammershøi was a Danish painter, sometimes written as Hammershoi in English. He is known for portraits and interiors with a poetic, subdued quality. In 1905 the poet Rainer Maria Rilke observed that his work is wide-ranging and unhurried, and always offers a way into talking about what matters in art.
