About this artwork

This is the cover of issue no. 5 of the Soviet magazine Stroitelstvo Moskvy, which translates as Building Moscow, from 1929. El Lissitzky designed it as a magazine illustration. A large red 5 stands out at once, set beside heavy Cyrillic lettering. A circular black architectural floor plan adds a second strong shape to the page. Together, the red numeral, the dark plan and the bold type give the cover a clear, structured look that suits a magazine about building.

On your wall: With its red, black and bold lettering, it suits a study, a hallway or a plain living space where a single graphic piece can stand out.
