Vilhelm Hammershøi, 1890
A dim bedroom held in stillness: a wardrobe, the foot of a bed and a tall curtained window, all quietly arranged.

Vilhelm Hammershøi painted this bedroom in 1890, in oil on canvas. The room is dim and sparsely furnished. A wardrobe stands against the wall, the end of a bed and a single chair sit nearby, and a tall window hangs with curtains. A small framed picture on the wall is the only decoration. Hammershøi is known for subdued, poetic interiors, and this painting shows that quiet sensibility well. The work is held at Museum Ordrupgaard.
On your wall: Its muted, dim tones and calm domestic subject suit bedrooms, studies and quiet hallways, particularly in restrained, minimalist spaces.

Vilhelm Hammershøi was a Danish painter, sometimes written as Hammershoi in English. He is known for portraits and interiors with a poetic, subdued quality. In 1905 the poet Rainer Maria Rilke observed that his work is wide-ranging and unhurried, and always offers a way into talking about what matters in art.
