Painted in 1914 in oil on canvas, The Four Rooms is an interior by the Danish painter Vilhelm Hammershøi, whose work is known for its poetic, subdued quality. The title points to a sequence of rooms, and the painting invites the viewer to look through them in turn. Hammershøi was an artist of interiors and quiet portraits, and the Rilke remark that his work is wide-ranging and slow suits this kind of painting well. The original belongs to the collection of Museum Ordrupgaard.
On your wall: Its calm, restrained subject suits hallways, studies and bedrooms, or any minimalist space where a quiet picture can reward a longer look.

Vilhelm Hammershøi was a Danish painter, sometimes written as Hammershoi in English. He is known for portraits and interiors with a poetic, subdued quality. In 1905 the poet Rainer Maria Rilke observed that his work is wide-ranging and unhurried, and always offers a way into talking about what matters in art.
