About this artwork

Hammershøi painted this view of his apartment at 30 Strandgade in Copenhagen around 1906, in oil on canvas. Sunlight comes through a window and lights the floor and a door on the right, while a woman stands in the shadows. The room is almost bare, the tones are muted, and a closed door sits beside the window. Together these give the scene a still, slightly haunting mood. Hammershøi is among Denmark's most celebrated artists, known for quiet spaces, silence and a sense of mystery, and his paintings of this apartment are among his most memorable works.

On your wall: Its muted tones and calm, spare subject suit a quiet reading corner, a bedroom, a hallway or a study where a restful, contemplative atmosphere is wanted.

About Vilhelm Hammershøi

Vilhelm Hammershøi was a Danish painter, sometimes written as Hammershoi in English. He is known for portraits and interiors with a poetic, subdued quality. In 1905 the poet Rainer Maria Rilke observed that his work is wide-ranging and unhurried, and always offers a way into talking about what matters in art.
