Hendrik van Balen, 1620
God the Father cradles the dead Christ while a dove hovers above, ringed by angels in a vividly coloured Flemish altarpiece.

Painted in oil on wood around 1620, this altarpiece shows the traditional theme of the Trinity: God the Father holds the dead Christ, with the dove of the Holy Spirit above them. Angels encircle the group, carrying the instruments of Christ's Passion. Unusually, God wears the purple papal tiara, a way of stressing the pope's role as God's true representative on earth. On the clasp of his elaborate cape is a tiny figure of Saint Barbara, perhaps hinting that it once stood in a chapel dedicated to her. It was made in Antwerp, at a time when the Catholic Church encouraged religious images that promoted its teaching.
On your wall: Its rich colour and solemn subject suit a study, library, or quiet reading corner, and sit well in traditional rooms or alongside darker wood and book-lined walls.

Hendrick van Balen was a Flemish Baroque painter who also designed stained glass. He is known for small cabinet pictures, often painted on copper, with mythological and allegorical scenes as his favourite subjects and religious themes less often. He helped renew Flemish painting in the early 17th century and taught Anthony van Dyck.
