About this artwork

Seurat shows the sideshow of the Circus Corvi at place de la Nation, with a trombonist on a platform, musicians behind a railing, a boy and a ringmaster at the right, and dark silhouettes of spectators in the foreground. It was his first nocturnal scene and his first painting of popular entertainment. Worked in the pointillist manner, the night is built from small touches of colour. He returned to the theme over nearly six years before finishing the painting. It was first shown at the 1888 Salon des Indépendants in Paris, where it was among his least admired works. It is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

On your wall: Its dark, glowing night scene suits a living room, study or reading corner where a quieter, moodier atmosphere is welcome.

About Georges Seurat

Georges Pierre Seurat was a French post-Impressionist artist. He is remembered for devising chromoluminarism and pointillism, painting approaches built on the careful handling of colour and light. He also made drawings in conté crayon on rough-surfaced paper, a medium that suited his interest in tone and texture.
