Paul Gauguin, 1902
Two women stand barefoot, one gesturing beyond the frame, in a dreamlike late painting by Gauguin that invites you to wonder who is calling.

Gauguin painted The Call in 1902, on a remote island in Polynesia, a year before his death. It belongs to a group of late works that reflect on life and death. Two women stand barefoot, as though on sacred ground, and one gestures towards someone outside the picture. She may be answering a call from fate or destiny. Painted in oil on canvas, it shows the artist achieving his ambition of working from memory and imagination, which gives the scene its mysterious, dreamlike quality.
On your wall: Its quiet, contemplative mood suits a living room, study or bedroom where there is space to pause and look.

Paul Gauguin was a French painter who also worked as a sculptor, printmaker, ceramist and writer. His art is linked with Post-Impressionism and Symbolism, and he was an influential maker of woodcuts and wood engravings. Only moderately successful in his lifetime, he is now valued for his experimental use of colour and his Synthetist style, which set him apart from Impressionism.
