About this artwork

Painted in oil on canvas in October 1889, this view looks across a ploughed field near the asylum at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. A peasant walks through it carrying a wheatsheaf, and a lilac bush and several buildings sit within the enclosure. Behind them the Alpilles mountains rise, leaving only a small patch of sky at the top. Van Gogh thought of the painting as a companion, or pendant, to The Reaper, which he had made earlier the same year. It measures 73 by 92 centimetres and is now in the collection of the Indianapolis Museum of Art.

On your wall: Its rural subject and landscape format suit a living room, study or dining room, particularly where a calm view of the countryside would be welcome.
