About this artwork

Robert S. Duncanson painted this panoramic view in oil on canvas in 1867. It draws on an episode from Thomas Moore's popular poem Lalla-Rookh, which follows a Persian princess travelling to the Indian subcontinent to be married. Members of a courtly entourage leave a palace with a vaguely Islamic character, arrive by boat, and climb a monumental staircase to a plaza where a fountain sends up a tall plume of water. Despite these story details, the people stay small beside the grandeur of the landscape itself. Duncanson, based in Cincinnati, was the first African American artist to win recognition both nationally and abroad.

On your wall: Its wide, panoramic scenery suits a living room, study or hallway where there is wall space for a landscape to open up the room.
