Thomas Moran painted this view of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone in 1871. It belongs to his paintings of Yellowstone National Park, a subject he returned to in his work. Moran was an American painter and printmaker associated with the Hudson River School, and the Rocky Mountains often appeared in his art. He was the younger brother of the marine artist Edward Moran, with whom he shared a studio in New York. Here, the canyon's landscape takes centre stage, inviting you to look into its depths and across its rugged scenery.
On your wall: Well suited to a living room, study or hallway, where a landscape of this scale and subject can give a wall a sense of depth and open space.
