The Fog Warning was painted by Winslow Homer in 1885, in oil on canvas, and now belongs to the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. It is one of several marine paintings by the American artist, and it looks at the hard working lives of fishermen in Maine. The title points to the heart of the scene: a warning of fog, and the risk that comes with it for those out on the water. Homer made two other paintings the same year on similar themes, The Herring Net and Breezing Up, and the three are often counted among his finest works on the subject.

Winslow Homer was an American painter and illustrator, working mainly with landscape subjects and best known for his scenes of the sea. He is regarded as one of the leading painters of nineteenth-century America, and as an important figure in American art more broadly. His marine paintings remain the work most closely associated with his name.
