Thomas Cole visited Italy in 1831 and made a small pencil sketch of this vista of Florence shortly before sunset. Six years later, in his New York studio, he turned that drawing into a large oil painting. He added figures and goats to the foreground, giving the scene a gently picturesque touch. In 1837 he exhibited the painting alongside a view of the Catskill Mountains in New York. In showing the two together, Cole set out to prove that he had mastered the very different landscapes of the Old and New Worlds.

Thomas Cole was an Anglo-American painter who founded the Hudson River School, a movement that gave American landscape its own voice. He painted romantic landscapes alongside history paintings, mostly in oil on canvas. European painters shaped his work, yet it carries a distinctly American sensibility, and he remained prolific throughout his career.
