About this artwork

Painted in 1893 by Ferdinand Hodler, this landscape takes its title from the foot of the Petit Salève, so the view is set low, at the base of the hill. Hodler was a Swiss painter, among the best-known of the nineteenth century. His early work included portraits, landscapes and genre scenes in a realistic style, and he later developed a personal Symbolism that he called "parallelism". A work like this invites you to take in the ground and the slope of the land at your own pace.

On your wall: A calm landscape that suits living rooms, studies and hallways, especially where you want a sense of open countryside on the wall.
