About this artwork

Thomas Cole painted this view of Schroon Mountain in the Adirondacks in 1838, in oil on canvas. He sketched the scene in early summer, but when he worked it up in his studio he chose the rich colours of autumn. This choice probably carried a patriotic note, as Cole admired the American forest in its autumn dress. Two years earlier, in his Essay on American Scenery, he had celebrated the country's wilderness as a kind of Eden. Two Indigenous men appear in the foliage at the lower right. The Adirondacks were still home to Algonquian and Iroquoian peoples, who hunted and fished there while adapting to growing settlement and industry.

On your wall: Its warm autumn reds and golds suit living rooms, studies and hallways, especially where a landscape can bring some natural colour to the space.

About Thomas Cole

Thomas Cole was an Anglo-American painter who founded the Hudson River School, a movement that gave American landscape its own voice. He painted romantic landscapes alongside history paintings, mostly in oil on canvas. European painters shaped his work, yet it carries a distinctly American sensibility, and he remained prolific throughout his career.
