Kaihō Yūshō, 1600
White camellias and blue morning glories share one landscape, bringing winter and summer together across a pair of folding screens.

This pair of six-panel folding screens was painted in Japan around 1600, during the Momoyama period, using ink, colour and gold on paper. In the right screen, white camellias bloom behind a large pine. In the left, blue morning glories creep through bamboo. Mountains and a bridge make the scene feel like one continuous landscape, yet the two screens set winter flowers beside summer ones, with time moving from right to left. Kaihō Yūshō also painted similar landscapes for Zen temples in Kyoto.
On your wall: Its calm landscape, white and blue blooms and touches of gold would suit a living room, hallway or quiet study where a considered, nature-inspired piece is welcome.
