About this artwork

Kunisada made this colour woodblock print around the mid 1820s, in Japan's Edo period. The title tells us it shows a woman leaving a bath house, a quiet everyday moment. Look to the upper right and you will find a small image of a horse emerging from a gourd. It alludes to the story of the Daoist immortal Chokaro, a subject that was popular in otsu-e folk paintings. Kunisada was among the most popular and prolific designers of ukiyo-e prints in nineteenth-century Japan, and this print shows how he could combine a scene of daily life with a witty reference.

On your wall: It would suit a study, hallway or living room where a small, characterful scene of daily life from Edo-period Japan can be enjoyed up close.
