About this artwork

This colour woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada was made in Japan around the late 1820s, during the Edo period. It belongs to a series titled The Military Tales of Han and Chu, and this sheet takes Fan Kuai of the Han as its subject. Kunisada, also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III, was among the most popular and commercially successful designers of ukiyo-e prints in nineteenth-century Japan, and in his own day his reputation outshone that of Hokusai, Hiroshige and Kuniyoshi. The print is held in the Cleveland Museum of Art.

On your wall: A warrior portrait in the ukiyo-e tradition, it suits a study, hallway or living room where Japanese art or a considered, history-minded collection is displayed.
