About this artwork

Utagawa Kunisada II made this print in 1865, in the late Edo period. It is one of three colour woodblock sheets that together form a triptych, so the scene was designed to be read across the panels side by side. The title, Rustic Genji's Poetry Contest, points to Mitsuuji and an excursion to the seaside. Kunisada II was a designer of ukiyo-e prints and one of three artists to take the name Kunisada. He also headed the Utagawa school. This sheet is one part of a larger composition, and it rewards a slow look at how the picture is arranged.

On your wall: It would sit well in a study, living room or hallway, particularly where Japanese prints or a calm, narrative scene are welcome.
