About this artwork

This 1931 print shows the Golden Temple in Amritsar, also known as Harmandir Sahib. It is the work of Hiroshi Yoshida, a Japanese artist born in 1876, who made woodblock prints of landscapes and places from many parts of the world. The print was made in the Shōwa era and is a horizontal ōban format, in ink and colour on paper. Yoshida printed it himself, a method known as jizuri. It carries his signature in the block, along with his pencil signature in the lower right margin and his seal.

On your wall: Its subject and carefully built woodblock colour suit a study, living room or hallway, particularly where travel and Japanese art are already appreciated.

About Hiroshi Yoshida

He is counted, alongside Hasui Kawase, among the finest artists of the shin-hanga style, and is admired above all for his landscapes. He travelled widely, and became known for presenting subjects such as the Taj Mahal, the Swiss Alps and the Grand Canyon in traditional Japanese woodblock form.
