A quiet winter view along the Sumida River in Edo, made by Ikeda Eisen as a colour woodblock print in the early 1830s.

This colour woodblock print by Ikeda Eisen dates from the early 1830s, during Japan's Edo period. The title points to a distant view of snow along the Sumida River in Edo, so the scene is one of winter and open space seen from afar. Woodblock prints of this kind were built up in colour from carved blocks, which gives the image its flat, clear areas of tone. It is a gentle subject, and the sense of distance invites a slow look.
On your wall: Its snowy river subject suits calm spaces such as a study, hallway, bedroom or living room, especially where Japanese art or a restrained, quiet look is welcome.
