About this artwork

Hokusai made this colour woodblock print in the mid-1830s, during Japan's Edo period. It shows Toru, a high-ranking minister who was the son of an emperor, enjoying the company of two other men in his landscape garden, which looks out over the water. Hokusai may have been illustrating one of Toru's own poems, which speaks of boats floating on the water in bright moonlight, shaded by pines. The title points to a crescent moon above the lake, giving the scene its calm, nocturnal mood.

On your wall: Its tranquil lakeside scene and moonlit theme suit a study, bedroom or quiet living space, especially where you like Japanese art or a contemplative atmosphere.
