About this artwork

Hiroshi Yoshida made this work in 1926, and its title points to sailing boats on the water after dark. Yoshida was a 20th-century Japanese painter and woodblock printmaker, counted alongside Hasui Kawase among the finest artists of the shin-hanga style. He was especially admired for his landscapes. He travelled widely to see different artistic traditions and landscapes, and became known for bringing places far from Japan into the traditional woodblock manner. Boats and water are a quiet, enduring subject for a landscape artist, and here the night setting gives the scene a calm, reflective mood.

On your wall: Well suited to a bedroom, study or quiet living space, where a calm nocturnal scene of boats on the water can add a restful note.
