Ohara Koson shows an egret standing on a single leg while rain falls around it, with the pale bird set against a black background. The work is a colour woodblock print with blind printing, a technique in which shapes are pressed into the paper without ink. It was published in Tokyo by Watanabe Shōzaburō and dates from between 1925 and 1936. Koson was a Japanese painter and print designer active in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, associated with the shin-hanga movement. The image is simple in its composition and gives full attention to the bird and the weather.
On your wall: The dark ground and pale bird suit calm, uncluttered spaces such as a study, bedroom, hallway or living room, particularly where a restrained, contemplative mood is wanted.
