About this artwork

Frederic Edwin Church painted The Aegean Sea in 1877, in oil on canvas, and it counts among his last large-scale works. A double rainbow arches over a bright Mediterranean shoreline. Classical ruins and a tomb cut into the rock stand among trees, while small figures make their way along a path. The sea stretches beyond, held in the same luminous light. Church was an American landscape painter, known for panoramic views, realistic detail and dramatic light, and those qualities are plain to see here. The painting is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

On your wall: Its soft, luminous light and calm sea view suit a living room, study or quiet hallway, especially where a traditional or gently coloured scheme would welcome a landscape.
