Painted in 1859, this is a landscape by the Swiss artist Alexandre Calame, who is associated with the Düsseldorf School. As the title tells us, oak trees are at the heart of the scene, and they invite a slow, attentive look at the setting around them. The work is in oil paint on canvas, a medium well suited to the careful rendering of foliage and natural light that landscape painting asks for. Today it belongs to the collection of the Hermitage Museum.
On your wall: A landscape of oak trees suits a living room, study or hallway, where it brings a calm, natural presence to the space.
