Painted in 1870, this landscape shows a sunset above the Catskill Mountains, seen from Church Hill at Olana. He is known for large canvases of mountains, waterfalls and sunsets, painted with realistic detail, dramatic light and sweeping views. He showed major works in New York City, where audiences paid to see them.
