About this artwork

Church painted this view of a blazing sunset over wilderness near Mount Katahdin in Maine in his New York studio, working from a sketch he had made on a visit almost two years earlier. The work is in oil on canvas. Although Church often celebrated the grandeur of the American landscape, this picture seems to carry further meaning: made just before the Civil War, its fiery subject can be read as an image of the conflict to come. Church was well known for his technical skill and his sense of showmanship. Rather than show the painting alongside other artists' work in an annual exhibition, he displayed it on its own at a prestigious gallery. Advance publicity and warm reviews drew several hundred visitors over seven weeks.

On your wall: Its glowing sunset tones and wide wilderness view suit a living room, study or dining room where a dramatic landscape can take centre stage.
