Painted in 1907, this oil on canvas shows the music room at Strandgade 30. A piano, a chair, a cello and a violin furnish the interior, so the room itself becomes the subject, with the instruments waiting in place. Hammershøi, a Danish painter, is known for poetic, subdued interiors and portraits, and this work belongs to that quiet tradition. In 1905 Rainer Maria Rilke observed that his art is wide-ranging and slow, and it rewards looking at length rather than a quick glance.
On your wall: Suits calm, uncluttered spaces such as a living room, study or hallway, and sits well in a music corner or anywhere that welcomes a restrained, contemplative note.
