A red-roofed house glimpsed through bare trees, set beneath a violet sky: a quiet rural scene in soft, unhurried colour.

This oil painting shows a rural house with a red roof and a small shed beside it, seen through bare trees. They stand on a green meadow beneath a violet sky. The brushwork and colour follow an Impressionist approach, which may surprise those who know Malevich mainly for his abstract work. The painting dates from around 1929–30 and measures 48.3 x 63.5 cm. It is held in the Tretyakov Gallery.
On your wall: The green, red and violet tones suit living rooms, studies and hallways, especially in calm, minimalist spaces where a gentle landscape can bring some colour.

Kazimir Malevich was a Russian avant-garde artist and art theorist. Through both his paintings and his writings, he helped shape the course of abstract painting in the twentieth century. He is best remembered as the founder of Suprematism, a radically non-objective approach to painting that he introduced in 1915.
