Worthington Whittredge, 1861
A sunlit farm near Dobb's Ferry, with a hay wagon and long afternoon shadows. It is a calm scene, yet it carries a quiet message of its time.

Whittredge painted this view of a farm near Dobb's Ferry, New York, in 1861, the first year of the Civil War. A wagon carries a generous load of hay, and the afternoon shadows stretch long across the land. Beside the homestead hangs an American flag, a subtle nod to the conflict. For Northern viewers, the scene celebrated farmers working their own land, and so offered a quiet critique of Southern slavery. It also reads as a hopeful picture of harmony between people and nature. The work is oil on canvas.
On your wall: Its warm pastoral subject and gentle afternoon light suit a living room, dining room, study or hallway, especially where a calm, traditional landscape is welcome.

Worthington Whittredge was an American painter of the Hudson River School, highly regarded in his own day. He travelled widely and excelled at landscape, with many of his works now in major museums. Friend to Albert Bierstadt and Sanford Robinson Gifford, he led the National Academy of Design in 1874–75 and sat on selection committees for the 1876 and 1878 exhibitions.
